He and his dog named Manchee are born into a world of lies in Pressintown, where boys become men at the age of thirteen and the new men always ignore their old friends until they are men. Todd is the last boy, since the women all died. Killed by the noise everyone said. The noise is what allows others to see and hear your thoughts, all men and animals have it, but it seemingly killed all the women, but when he goes into the swamp and meets a girl, his world changes.
The Ask and the Answer
Finding out what it really means to be a man in pressitown has cost Todd his innocence, at least he knows Viola will be safe, he learns that the noise wasn't a plague, but something in the air that didn't affect women.
